senator kerry as our next secretary of state. it's a great honor to serve in the united states senate. it's a privilege and honor to represent people here in the united states senate and part of that special privilege for people that we serve white. incredible public servants that we have had the privilege of serving life in the united states senate. i put senator kerry at the top of that list. he has devoted his life to public service. he is so qualified to assume responsibilities of secretary of state. he understands this complex world in which we live in. and the differences among countries. many are strategically important to the united states if they don't share our values. senator john kerry understands that. he understands the importance to advance u.s. interests and we need to understand concerns of other countries and we need to establish relations with other countries. he's made a personal commitment to understand the world in which we live and area i don't think there's been a member of this body that has spent more time, going to more places, met with more people, in order to

committee looks at the problem of gun violence in the united states, police work around the clock to save a 6-year-old boy held hostage by a man with a gun. for the past 17 hours that little boy has been held in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama, not far from the georgia border. police say the boy was taken after an armed man got aboard a school bus, demanded children, shot and killed the bus driver, and then fled to that underground bunker with the boy. neighbors describes what they've been told. >> i talked to the girl that was on the school bus and she told me he came on the bus with a gun, shot into the ceiling or the floor board once and shot the bus driver three times after asking for a child, two children between 6 and 8. the school bus driver apparently he did everything he could, he said you can't do that, threw the bus into reverse, floored the gas and that's when the bus alarm came on and tried to get out of the way but it was too late, he already shot the bus driver three times. >> our affiliate wdhn says the gunman is a 65-year-old man, reporter josh roltenberg i

of the united states, eric holder, during the richmond program, he called it a cookie cutter approach to solving crime. he did not have a lot of enthusiasm about it. i remember 7 -- senator sessions held a hearing. the department of justice said that a drug dealer with a gun is a guppy and we cannot concentrate on guppies. those studies are what are ruining neighborhoods, destroying lives, and killing people. we've got to confront their behavior and take them off the street. they do not obey by all the laws that we have now. we've got to get real with what works and does not. my problem with background checks is that you are never going to get criminals to go through universal background checks. and of the law-abiding people, you will create an enormous federal theocracy -- bureaucracy, unfunded, and people have to pay the fees, pay the taxes. we do not even prosecute anybody right now that goes through the system we have. we will make all of those law- abiding people go through the system and then we will not prosecute any of the bad guys if they do catch one. none of it makes any sense in the
